About Aquero
Aqueró is the Bigourdan-dialect Occitan word Saint Bernadette Soubirous used at the grotto of Massabielle to describe the Lady she saw. It means “that one.” Bernadette had little schooling. Her childhood was marked by chronic illness and she did not yet know French. When the apparition came, she had no theological vocabulary and no honorific to reach for. She used the word she had.
We chose the name for what it carries: innocence, authenticity, the posture of a beginner. Many of us, even after a lifetime of faith, still feel that we are just starting. Aqueró names that beginning. It is the first encounter of heavenly beauty in this valley of tears.
When Mary appeared to Bernadette at the grotto, there were moments when both simply smiled. So much was communicated in that smile alone. Aquero is built for the same kind of meeting, in whatever form a phone screen and a prayer can carry it.
What Aquero Is
Aquero is a pilgrim companion app for those drawn to Our Lady of Lourdes. The app is one piece of a spiritual tool belt many already carry. Aquero does not replace what Christians require to grow in closeness with Jesus Christ. It supports it.
There is no real difference between opening the app at home and opening it at the grotto. God is not bound by geography. Bernadette is the proof. Mary appeared at what was, at the time, the town’s garbage dump, to a sick and unschooled girl. Grace travels.
Mary is the moon. She reflects the Sun. The point of any Marian devotion, including this one, is to reflect Christ to the world more clearly.
What Aquero Is Not
Not a publishing platform. Not a content management system. Not a feature-locked subscription product. Not in competition with the other apps already doing good work in this space; where their work is good, we are glad of it.
What We Promise
No sale of user data, ever. No third-party tracking added by us. No psychological engineering. No streaks. No paid features in the app. No gated content.
Simple, like Saint Bernadette.
How We Are Structured
Aquero is published by Harnisch LLC. It is lay-built, born from a love of Lourdes and a desire to serve pilgrims wherever they happen to be. It is not a parish project. It is not a diocesan project. It is not an official work of the Sanctuary at Lourdes or of any Church body, and it claims no affiliation with them.
How We Are Funded
Aquero is currently self-funded. Stripe is the channel for anyone who wants to help keep the app alive. The ask is $5 a week, with the option to give several weeks at once. Gifts cover the app’s operating costs: hosting, development, and design. They are made to Harnisch LLC, the app’s publisher, and are not tax-deductible.
Where We Are Headed
The work right now is simple: make the app good, keep it free, and let it find the people it is meant to serve. Anything more than that can come in due course. If Our Lady has other plans, so be it.
A Closing Word
If you read this, never download the app, never give a dollar, and never visit Lourdes, the hope is that you walk away one step closer to heaven. Salvation is the destination. Christ in the heart, reflected to others, is the road. That is what Aquero is for.
“The Virgin used me as a broom to remove the dust. When the work is done, the broom is put behind the door again.”
